The New York Times' Amy Harmon reports A Teacher on the Front Line as Faith and Science Clash. She focused on David Campbell's efforts at Ridgeview High School in Orange Park, Florida (near Jacksonville) as well as work he and others did in crafting at least somewhat explicit standards for teaching evolution. The efforts of some fundamentalist ministers and parents, at least one colleague, are noted as barriers yet I especially liked how Ms. Harmon reported on the polling that shows Americans have consistently remained lacking in understanding of this critical facet of science. She did a fine job of reporting on the conservatism of this area but how faith trumps fact is a national tragedy.
That Answers in Genesis was singled out demonstrated she'd done at least some of her homework. Their Evolution Exposed "resources" are available for merely $19.99. Yet, that outfit is hardly the only barrier. Southern Baptist leaders like Albert Mohler are certainly not as radical as the profiteers from Kentucky/Ohio. Seattle's own Discovery Institute could have been referenced.
I'd mentioned a less admirable "educator" recently from the Florida panhandle yet David Campbell is due a tip of the tam. He's obviously motivated to teach, refine his craft, help kids, make a difference ... Well done Sir! John Gunn
