When we've created a society in which people are more fearful of college tuition costs, lousy job opportunities and lack of health care than being blown to bits in a war zone, we have to ask ourselves what are we asking our troops to fight for in the end? Traditionally, warriors have gone off to battle ostensibly to preserve a nation's way of life at home. What happens when that way of life becomes so gutted by a culture of individualistic greed and self-preservation that communitarian cooperation and goals no longer exist?I know plenty of military folks that accept their burdens out of a spirit of service and sacrifice yet certainly we can't ignore the lack for some having other alternatives. Often we've had "rich man's war and poor man's fight" yet I think Bu$hCo has managed to deliver profits to his backers while still letting the regular folks do the heavy lifting. Again, the misadventures in Iraq and the reduction of adequate resources in Afghanistan has been a choice made by Bu$hCo. Even if a defensible choice, the management of Iraq has certainly been dreadfully carried out by Rummy. Peace ... or War!
Nearly 50 years in east Alabama, a surname going back to Vikings invading Scotland, and finally too much religious fundamentalism coupled to reactionary radicalism motivates me.
